Loch Awe Development

Argyll, £2.3 million

The site comprised an awkward long, narrow strip of ground, steeply falling towards the edge of the loch, divided by an active single track railway.  The long since demolished Victorian railway station was sorely missed and the site had become a wasteland and dumping ground.
On the site of the former railway station, a new waiting room was proposed, with a new restaurant and visitor centre behind, taking full advantage of the stunning views across the loch.
On the other side of the track, a ribbon of new houses was proposed, elevated on a series of traditional brick arches, containing craft workshops.  The design uses an industrial language, with a mixture of both traditional and modern materials, to fit in with the surrounding context.
